To improve mental health, increase employment opportunities and social interaction, the government has decided to establish the 'University for the Third Age'.
Conceived as a unique and innovative educational organization, this university to be established in Tirana is expected to educate 80 people per year, while the beneficiaries will be citizens over 50 years of age.
"At this stage of life, meaningful social activities can significantly improve mental health, increase life satisfaction and quality of life, they can also reduce symptoms of depression," the 2025-2030 program states.
Currently, nearly 42% of the population in the country, or about 1 million inhabitants, is over 50 years old, according to 2023 CENSUS data.
Citizens who decide to return to their studies will have the opportunity to take courses and training in various fields, from the arts, professions, foreign languages, history, science, philosophy, current affairs and more.
The Ministry of Health says in the document that such a step has proven successful in France and Britain, as it has combatted loneliness and stimulated social interaction and the development of various knowledge regardless of age.
This category, which will receive knowledge in certain fields and will be treated, will also have support for employment. According to this document, 300 businesses within these 5 years must create the conditions for the employment of the elderly with suitable hours.
