Albania celebrates "Teacher's Day" on March 7! 138 years ago, the first Albanian school was opened in Korça

March 7th is celebrated in all schools across the country today, where festive activities are organized in gratitude for the work of teachers in educating the new generation.
The holiday comes on the day when 138 years ago in the southeastern city of Korça, the First Albanian-language School was opened, an event of pivotal importance for the efforts of the Albanian people to preserve their language and alphabet.
Even under difficult conditions, when the teaching of the Albanian language was strictly prohibited due to conditions under Ottoman rule, the Korça school remained open for almost 20 years.
Its leaders were well-known figures of the Albanian Renaissance such as: Pandeli Sotiri, Petro Nini Luarasi, Nuçi Naçi, Thoma Avrami, etc. The great contribution that these prominent patriots and activists made to the nation is evidenced by the ardent desire they had to spread knowledge among the people.
