On March 23, 1935, the great actor Aleksandër Moisiu passed away

On March 23, 1935, the actor of Albanian origin, Aleksandër Moisiu, passed away.

On the German-speaking stage, he would neatly embody leading roles in a wide spectrum of works of European literature, ranging from ancient Greek tragedies to modern times. His career would start at the age of 19, when he started performing minor roles as a "compare" on the Burgtheater stage.

Following this, he was engaged in the theaters of Prague and Berlin, where he stood out for his acting skills, especially in the interpretation of the role of Oedipus the King and Hamlet. This sensational progress would push him to unfold his talent towards other stages of Europe and North America.

Part of his performing repertoire were also the main roles in the premieres of plays by Hauptmann ("Der weiße Heiland"), Wedekind ("Frühlings Erwachen") and Hofmannsthal ("Jedermann"). Moisiu could also break into the cinematography genre, where during 1910-1935, he participated in 10 film productions, 8 of which were silent.

In 1935, at the end of his life, the actor requested Italian citizenship, which was accepted by the relevant authorities. Also, as the son of an Albanian from Kavaja and an Arber woman, he wanted to obtain the citizenship of his country of origin, which refused to fulfill his last will.

The documents include announcements about the performances given by him, photos from the roles played and the document granting citizenship.
