6 years ago today, COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic by the WHO

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, an event that changed the world and the lives of every country, including Albania. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. On the same day, the NBA suspended its season after player Rudy Gobert tested positive, actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive, and President Donald Trump declared a national emergency with a travel ban from several European countries.

In Albania, the first official case of COVID-19 was confirmed that same day – a father and son who had returned from Italy. Within hours, authorities took the first emergency measures: closing schools, restricting movement, and mobilizing the health system. The months that followed were characterized by anxiety, isolation, and the struggle to understand a still unknown virus. Doctors and nurses were placed on the front lines of the battle, while citizens faced severe restrictions and economic challenges.

Vaccines emerged as the main weapon to curb the pandemic, reducing severe cases and loss of life, although the vaccination process was accompanied by debates about effectiveness and reported side effects.

Today, six years later, the pandemic remains a point of reference for collective memory, lessons and reflections on public health. Unresolved questions about the origin of the virus, the long-term effectiveness of vaccines and transparency in the management of global crises continue to be topics that demand attention. March remains a month of remembrance and reflection for the whole world and Albania, a reminder of the strength, challenges and human solidarity in the face of global crises.
