Hungary has used another measure in an attempt to reduce the number of abortions. According to local media, starting tomorrow, pregnant women seeking an abortion will be asked to first listen to the sound of the embryo's heartbeat.

The move by the government of Viktor Orban, the populist prime minister, signals a tightening of the country's relatively liberal abortion laws by forcing doctors to show a woman the vital signs of an embryo or fetus.

Abortion in Hungary is allowed up to the 12th week of pregnancy for medical or social reasons, and later if there are serious health complications.

" Almost two-thirds of Hungarians associate the beginning of a child's life with the first heartbeat," says the decree issued by the interior minister, Sandor Pinter.

The Ministry of the Interior said that modern equipment can detect heartbeats early in pregnancy and thus provide "more complete information for pregnant women ".

The change in the law means that when applying for an abortion, a woman must present a medical certificate stating that " factors indicating the presence of the vital functions of the embryo have been clearly brought to her attention ".
