Constitution of the new legislature, the Assembly of Kosovo convenes today for the 29th attempt
The Kosovo Assembly convenes today at 11:00 in its 29th attempt at constitution-making. The session has been called in an effort to elect the Speaker of the Assembly and take the first step towards the establishment of institutions following the February 9 elections.
The election of the Speaker of the Assembly has remained blocked due to disagreements between political parties. The LVV, which emerged victorious in the February elections, is failing to secure the necessary majority. The Democratic Party of Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosovo, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and NISMA are against the proposed name for Speaker of the Assembly.
Vetëvendosje, Guxo and Alternativa have put Albulena Haxhiu to the vote six times and in the absence of votes are demanding a secret ballot. The chairman of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku, said last night through a Facebook status that today's session will also end without an epilogue.
He has insisted on the creation of a Unity Government, for which he has said he will come up with a 15-point agenda, with a concrete platform for cooperation. If this attempt also fails, the country could face a deepening institutional crisis and potentially an automatic dissolution of the Assembly.
