Political impasse, today the 18th attempt to constitute the Assembly in Kosovo

The Kosovo Assembly is expected to hold its 18th session today in an attempt to reconstitute itself, three months after the parliamentary elections held on February 9. Despite calls for an institutional unblocking, political parties have yet to reach a consensus on the election of the Speaker of the Assembly.

For several sessions in a row, the proposal to form a commission to oversee the secret ballot for the speaker of parliament has failed to pass. The winning party of the elections, the Vetëvendosje Movement, has continued to nominate Albulena Haxhiu for the post of speaker of parliament, but without sufficient support from other parties.

PDK, LDK and AAK have refused to vote on this proposal, seeking a name acceptable to all parties. Today's session is expected to start at 10:30. In case of another failure, voices may increase for constitutional intervention or a possible dissolution of the Assembly and holding new elections.
