"Mouth of Truth"

What you see in the accompanying photo is called - "The Mouth of Truth". It is located in Rome, in the historic part of the city, near the church of Santa Maria Cosmedin and is visited every year by thousands of tourists from around the world.

It is a round mass of stone, about 1300 kg, and represents the mask of a face that keeps the eyes and mouth open. It is thought to date back to about 2200 years ago, part of the cultural heritage of ancient Rome.

Some historians think that her face belongs to Oseanus, the god of the seas, some others associate her with Faunus, the god of rivers. It is thought to have come to where it is today from the Temple of Hercules, around the 13th century.

According to legend, she had the ability to distinguish what she was lying from who was telling the truth. If the liar put his hand in her mouth he would lose his fingers, which were believed to be eaten by the statue. This is more or less the "Truth Machine" used in American courts today to tell if a witness is telling the truth or lying. Same practices, different technologies!

Today, of course, visitors put their hand in her mouth without fear of having their fingers amputated, but in ancient times, such superstitions were normal to the psychology of the time. However, even today there remains something symbolic from the ancient tradition: - Whoever visits the object and puts his hand in his mouth is obliged to pay 5 euros, the equivalent of "cut fingers!
