US media: Democrats expand investigation into Kushner over resort deal in Albania

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are expanding their investigation into Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and peace envoy, to also examine a luxury resort he wants to build on the Albanian coast.
The project has caused weeks of protests in Albania, while accusations have also been raised that the land on which the resort is planned to be built was obtained through a forged ownership document.
In a letter originally published by MS NOW, Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said there are new questions about Kushner's "questionable real estate practices."
He asks Kushner to submit documents related to his “approval or review” of projects in Albania, including any communications with the US and Albanian governments.
Raskin said Democrats want to determine whether Kushner's conduct "should be investigated under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)," and whether that law needs to be amended.
According to a summary from the US Department of Commerce, the law makes it illegal for a US person or company to offer, pay or promise money or anything else of value to a foreign official for the purpose of securing or retaining business.
The new letter escalates an investigation Raskin launched in April into what Democrats called Kushner's "clear and irresolvable conflict of interest": the fact that he simultaneously serves as the White House peace envoy and runs a private investment company funded in part by Gulf sovereign wealth funds.

“ While you are acting as our country’s chief negotiator to end several international conflicts created or exacerbated by your father-in-law’s administration, you have found the time to cause an international incident all your own ,” Raskin wrote in the new letter regarding Kushner’s activities in Albania.
Kushner's representatives at his investment company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly called Raskin's request part of "the same tired narrative that Democrats have used against President Trump, his family and his administration for a decade."

Projekti në Shqipëri dhe protestat
Kushner njoftoi në vitin 2024 planet për zhvillimin e një resorti në bregdetin shqiptar, si pjesë e një investimi të kompanisë së tij Affinity Partners.
Por projekti ka shkaktuar protesta gjatë muajve të fundit, përfshirë protesta në kryeqytetin shqiptar. Protestat janë nxitur nga zemërimi për rolin e pretenduar të rojeve të sigurisë në projekt, të cilat janë akuzuar për përdorim dhune, si dhe nga shqetësimet për ndikimin e mundshëm të projektit mbi jetën e egër, përfshirë flamingot, fokat dhe breshkat e detit.
Projekti u përball me një valë të re polemikash në korrik, kur u publikuan raportime se një biznesmen – i kërkuar në Shqipëri për pastrim parash dhe për rolin e pretenduar në një operacion ndërkombëtar të trafikut të drogës – kishte falsifikuar dokumentin e pronësisë së tokës ku do të ndërtohet resorti.
Biznesmeni i ka mohuar akuzat për shkelje.
Wall Street Journal raportoi se banorët e zonës ishin përpjekur ta paralajmëronin Kushnerin se toka ishte marrë në mënyrë të paligjshme.
Një zëdhënës i grupit zhvillues të mbështetur nga Kushner tha për Wall Street Journal se sistemi juridik shqiptar është “vendi i duhur për zgjidhjen e çështjeve që lidhen me pronësinë e tokës”, por këmbënguli se “blerjet e tokës në themel të projektit janë kryer në mënyrë të ligjshme”.
Akuzat e Raskinit ndaj Kushnerit dhe Ramës
Në letrën drejtuar Kushnerit, Raskin shkroi se i gjithë ky episod tregon “joseriozitetin tuaj thelbësor si një ish-përfaqësues i Shteteve të Bashkuara” dhe “oreksin e pakufishëm dhe në dukje të pangopur të familjes Trump-Kushner për korrupsion politik dhe financiar”.
Ai shtoi: “Qeveria e kryeministrit shqiptar Edi Rama, e cila prej kohësh ka kërkuar të ndikojë në politikën amerikane, ju dha miratimin, por kryeministri nuk mundi të fitonte miratimin e elektoratit të tij për projektin tuaj të ëndrrave.”
Kushner, i cili është i martuar me vajzën e madhe të Trumpit, Ivanka, themeloi kompaninë e investimeve Affinity Partners në vitin 2021, pas shërbimit si këshilltar i lartë gjatë administratës së parë të Trumpit.
Sipas New York Times, investitori më i madh dhe ndër të parët e Affinity Partners është Fondi Publik i Investimeve i Arabisë Saudite, i drejtuar nga princi i kurorës Mohammed bin Salman, i cili ka investuar rreth 2 miliardë dollarë.

Since Trump returned to the White House last year, Kushner has worked as a US peace envoy and participated in negotiations to end conflicts abroad, including negotiations over Iran.
In his new letter, Raskin noted that Kushner had not responded to the committee's initial request, which sought his communications with Saudi, Emirati, Qatari or Israeli officials, as well as financial documents showing Affinity Partners' investors.
“ To give you the benefit of the doubt,” Raskin wrote, “ I’m assuming you may have been too distracted and engaged in your repeated and failed attempts to negotiate a lasting ceasefire in Iran, Lebanon, or Ukraine, to respond.”
Kushner denies the allegations.
Kushner's team has denied the allegations of wrongdoing.
In April, Affinity Partners' legal chief told MS NOW that Kushner has complied with "all applicable laws and requirements and has always acted in the best interests of the United States."
A White House spokesman said at the time that Kushner had "sacrificed time with his family and his livelihood" to work on administration initiatives.
However, Democrats are currently in the minority in the House of Representatives and therefore lack the power to issue subpoenas and have limited ability to compel Kushner to cooperate with the investigation.
This situation could change if Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in the November elections.
