Ricky Martin returns to the cinema, joins Gael García Bernal's new film

Ricky Martin returns to cinema after more than two decades.
The Puerto Rican singer has joined the cast of Gael García Bernal's new film, "Hombre al Agua," where in addition to starring, he also serves as executive producer.
The film is set to have its world and North American premieres at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals next month. According to Deadline, Martin joined the project shortly before filming began in Mexico.
“Hombre al Agua” is described as a dramatic comedy with surreal elements and is the third feature film directed by Gael García Bernal, who also plays the lead role, co-wrote the screenplay and was involved in the film's production.
Bernal plays Camilo, a Cuban lifeguard whose life changes when he saves Abel, a powerful Mexican businessman with political ambitions, from drowning in the Caribbean. Camilo follows him to Mexico and becomes his right-hand man, eventually marrying the businessman's daughter. However, his new life turns out to be much more dangerous than he imagined.
Ricky Martin appears as Roby, an actor hired to play Camilo in a biopic produced by his wife.
Gael García Bernal has revealed that Martin was his first choice for the role, but due to difficulties in contacting him, he kept his name a secret during most of the preparations.
"Ricky was the first one I thought of for the role, but it seemed like such a crazy idea, almost impossible," Bernal said.
According to him, the role only required one day of filming. Shortly before production began, he managed to find Martin's phone number and called him. "Before I could explain the project to him, he said, 'Whatever you want,'" the Mexican actor and director said.
The film also stars Esmeralda Pimentel, Débora Nascimento, Natalia Oreiro, Anna Díaz, Manuel García Rulfo and Jorge Salinas.
“Hombre al Agua” is co-produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna through their company La Corriente del Golfo, while Bernal collaborated with Mariano Pensotti on the screenplay.
The film is expected to be released in Mexican cinemas on September 24 and is one of 17 productions in competition to represent Mexico at the 99th Academy Awards.
