American economist Steve Hanke has reacted to the protests taking place in Tirana, publicly expressing his support for citizens who have been gathering for days against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
In a post on the social network X, Hanke wrote that for the 69th day in a row, thousands of Albanians have gathered in Tirana to protest. According to him, the protesters have accused Prime Minister Rama and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, of corruption.
"For the 69th day, thousands of Albanians have gathered in Tirana. Protesters accused Prime Minister Rama and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, of corruption," Hanke writes.
Following his message, the American economist goes further, demanding that Albania abandon the luxury project linked to Jared Kushner and calling for the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
"As a Knight of the Order of the Flag of Albania, it is time for Albania to reject Kushner's luxury project and for Prime Minister Rama to take the exit door," Hanke said.
His reaction comes at a time when protests in Tirana have continued for several days in a row, with the participation of citizens who oppose the government and their political and economic demands.
Hanke's post was also accompanied by footage from the protest in Tirana, giving international coverage to recent developments in the country.
Hanke against Kushner's project
In his reaction, Hanke also singles out the project related to Jared Kushner, which has sparked widespread debate in Albania.
The American economist's criticisms are related to the idea of developing a luxury tourist project in the Sazan area, an investment that has become part of political and public discussions.
Hanke has long been a vocal critic of the Albanian government and its economic policies. He has repeatedly commented on developments in Albania, but in this case he has chosen to place emphasis on the protests and the demand for political change.
With his latest post, he directly connects the citizens' protest to two hotly debated issues in public opinion: Edi Rama's governance and the project related to Jared Kushner.
Hanke's statement is expected to spark new political reactions, as he is not limited to commenting on the protests, but also openly expresses the position that Rama should step down as prime minister.
"It is time for Albania to reject Kushner's project and for Rama to take the exit door" - this is the direct message of the American economist, as the protests in Tirana continue.
