VIDEO/ Rare phenomenon in Russia, 4 moons appear over St. Petersburg!

A rare and very impressive celestial phenomenon appears to have been recorded over St. Petersburg, Russia, where four moons appeared in the night sky.

"Four moons appeared over St. Petersburg, Russia," Russian media outlet RT announced via the "X" platform (formerly Twitter), accompanying its post with a video showing not one, but four moons shining in the sky.

In another post, Nexta TV talks about a rare phenomenon, “Paraselene” (Dog Moon, or False Moon, which was observed overnight over Moscow and the surrounding area.

What is a “Paraselene”? A “Paraselene” (similar to a Halo), “moon dog” (also known as a “fake moon”) is produced by moonlight refracting through thin, hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals found in high cirrus clouds. This requires specific conditions, such as sub-zero temperatures, to prevail in the area at the time, and is most common in polar regions or areas with harsh winters. This is an atmospheric optical phenomenon where bright spots or “virtual moons” appear on either side of the Moon. According to NASA, they appear at an angle of 22 degrees or more from the Moon. Compared to the bright lunar disk, “Paramoons” are faint and easier to spot when the Moon is low on the horizon.

It is worth noting that independent media outlets were unable to verify the source of the videos, while online users questioned both the identity of the phenomenon – as a “Paraselene” – and whether or not the clips were edited.
