"CEZ-DIA" file and lobbying in the US, preliminary trial for

The preliminary hearing for the "CEZ-DIA" file and lobbying in the US against Ilir Meta has been postponed to January 12. Meta has been in detention since October of last year.

His lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, stated that the postponement came due to discrepancies between the prosecution's request to move the case to trial and the evidence presented in the file.

According to Cakran, the documents submitted by the prosecutors included evidence that, according to the defense, was not physically administered in the file and was not presented at the hearing. He said that this situation created a debate between the parties and made it impossible for the hearing to proceed normally.

"When reading the documents, Mr. Meta found that the request for the trial was drafted differently and the evidence that is recorded there is not marked, not physically recorded. This caused the hearing today to have this kind of complexity between Mr. Meta and the prosecutors," he told the media.

The lawyer also announced that tomorrow, December 23, they will address the Constitutional Court with additional evidence for their request for Meta's release from prison.

"Tomorrow we will present to the Constitutional Court, at their request, some additional evidence, which is also the latest report of the People's Advocate, which has concluded that political persecution is being used against Meta, and we will make it available to the Constitutional Court tomorrow,"  he said.

The “CEZ-DIA” file concerns the conflict between the Czech company CEZ and the Albanian company DIA, engaged in the collection of electricity debts during the time when CEZ operated in Albania. After the termination of the contract, the case ended in international arbitration.

The prosecution suspects that the resolution of the conflict in 2013, through an agreement between the Albanian state and CEZ, was accompanied by legal violations and favoritism of private interests. In this context, Ilir Meta is accused of having had a role in decision-making related to this process, at the time when he held high state positions.

In addition to the "CEZ-DIA" case, Ilir Meta is also accused by SPAK of consulting and lobbying contracts in the United States of America, laundering the proceeds of crime in the purchase of a house in Tirana, and failing to declare medical expenses for the period 2013-2019.
