Myanmar in critical situation after earthquake/ Over 3,300 victims, survivors in urgent need of help

Eight days after the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, a large part of the population is in critical condition and in urgent need of assistance. However, humanitarian aid is being distributed unevenly, favoring areas that support the military regime, according to allegations by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. So far, the military junta has not responded to these allegations.
According to official data published by state media, the number of victims has reached 3,354, while 220 people are missing. Over 4,800 others have been injured. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations warn of the risk of the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera, due to the lack of sanitary conditions and access to drinking water.
The situation has been exacerbated by the ongoing civil conflict that has destabilized the country since a military coup in 2021. The elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted from power, and more than three million citizens have been displaced since then. Even before the March 28 earthquake, healthcare was limited, but now, in the affected areas, it is almost impossible. Thousands are facing hunger and a lack of basic supplies. According to the UN, more than a third of Myanmar's population is in need of emergency humanitarian assistance.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake was among the most powerful in the country's modern history, causing the collapse of many buildings, including hospitals and schools, and destroying entire municipalities.
In an attempt to ease the situation and allow aid to flow in, the military junta declared a temporary ceasefire on April 2. However, according to UN data, the ceasefire is not being respected. By mid-week, at least 16 military airstrikes had been recorded, including in areas badly affected by the earthquake.
The recent visit of the head of the junta, Min Aung Hlaing, to the regional summit in Bangkok has caused strong reactions and protests in neighboring countries, while in Myanmar, the humanitarian crisis and the consequences of the war are making the future increasingly uncertain for millions of citizens.
