Zogaj on the new US ambassador: General Wendt will leave a mark more than anyone else, strong support for SPAK - RTSH
Discussions on the role, profile and expected impact of the new US Ambassador to Tirana, Eric Wendt, have been the focus of the political show “Trialog”. Moderated by journalist Alba Alishani, the panel, composed of renowned analysts Preç Zogaj, Lorenc Vangjeli and Arion Sulo, analyzed the priorities of the American diplomat, who is on the verge of receiving approval from the US Senate.
During the debate on the topic "From SPAK to Sazani, the messages of the US 'ambassador'", special attention was paid to the importance of the return of a full-fledged head of state to the American diplomatic headquarters on Elbasan Street, after a long absence.
High military and diplomatic profile
Analyst Preç Zogaj praised Eric Wendt's high profile, emphasizing that his background as a general gives another dimension to his approach to developments in Albania and the region. Zogaj expressed his belief that Wendt will leave a deep mark in this important post.
"He knows the situation in Albania very well. He is a general who has great experience under his belt. He has set priorities that are not his, but those of the State Department and President Trump," Zogaj said during his analysis.
Priorities: combating crime and commitments to NATO
Beyond the personal profile of the expected ambassador, the focus of the conversation was on the clear line of American foreign policy. According to Zogaj, US priorities in Albania demonstrate full institutional continuity, with a sharp focus on security and the rule of law.
He underlined that President Trump's administration has set out a very clear and strict agenda for official Tirana, listing as absolute priorities:
The uncompromising fight against drug trafficking.
Cracking down on organized crime and illegal trafficking.
Rigorous fulfillment of Albania's commitments in NATO structures.
Strong support for the new justice system
An essential part of the new ambassador's arrival is considered support for the new justice institutions, which are currently facing hot files of corruption and high-level crime. Wendt's arrival is seen as one more guarantee for the independence and efficiency of the Special Structure (SPAK).
Reflecting on this moment, Zogaj described the approaching confirmation of Wendt as extremely positive news for developments in the country:
"It's a good evening because the absence of the American ambassador has been felt in Albania for these 2 years, to provide even stronger support to SPAK and the justice system in general."
