Protest in front of the Ministry of Education, EU delegation reacts: All parties

The EU Delegation to Albania has issued an official response to the student protest that has been continuing for the second day in front of the Ministry of Education. In its response, the EU Delegation also commented on the violence recorded and expressed concern about the escalation.

The delegation stresses that police actions should be proportionate and respect the fundamental rights of protesters and journalists. It also called on the parties to reduce tensions.

"We express concern regarding the violent escalation of the protest in Tirana.

Freedom of assembly and expression are fundamental rights and core European values. They must be respected and exercised peacefully.

We are aware of allegations of excessive use of force by the police against protesters and journalists.

We expect police actions to be proportionate and respect fundamental rights, just as we expect these cases to be investigated with priority.

We encourage all parties to reduce tensions.

"Constructive dialogue between all stakeholders involved is the only way forward," the EU delegation's response states.
