Putin "gifts" Trump an American prisoner, Sky News analysis: What is behind this gesture and why now?

Russia has released former US Marine Robert Gilman after more than four years in prison, in a move seen as a direct gesture to Donald Trump. But the release could spell a bigger diplomatic blow for the Kremlin.

According to a Sky News analysis, Vladimir Putin's decision to release Gilman is unusual, as this time there was no Russian prisoner released in exchange.

US officials have described the decision as a "goodwill gesture" from the Russian president to Trump. The release came after reports that Gilman's health had deteriorated and that he was near death.

Why is this case unusual?

In the past, Moscow has used the release of American citizens as part of prisoner swap deals. This is what happened with Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich in 2024, while in 2022 American basketball player Brittney Griner was exchanged for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

In Gilman's case, Russia did not receive a Russian prisoner in exchange. This is precisely what makes the release an important political signal.

What does Putin want from Trump?

According to Sky News, the Kremlin may be investing in improving relations with the White House, in the hope that this gesture will bring benefits in the future.

The main focus remains the war in Ukraine. Moscow would have an interest in presenting Putin as a partner with whom Trump can negotiate and reach an agreement. But the timing of the release is also important. Russia is facing increasing pressure from Ukrainian drone attacks on its territory, while strikes on oil refineries are creating additional problems for the economy and logistics of the war. At the same time, efforts at peace talks have stalled.

Is Trump getting closer to Zelensky?

Another concern for Moscow is the recent rapprochement between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to British media analysis, this shows that the climate in Washington has changed significantly compared to a year ago, when Trump appeared closer to Putin and seemed more optimistic about an agreement that would be closer to the Kremlin's demands.

In this context, the release of Robert Gilman may be more than a humanitarian act.

For Moscow, the "gift" to Trump could be a diplomatic investment, in the hope of gaining influence in future negotiations over Ukraine.
