The fences surrounding the Parliament do not protect democracy. They are a symbol of a deeper division: the division between political power and the citizen.
"You do not represent us!" is the cry echoing in front of the Albanian Parliament by citizens who have been protesting for 54 days.
This is not just a protest slogan. It is the most serious challenge that can be made to a
Parliament in a democratic system. Because an Assembly is not legitimized only by the number of deputies or by a parliamentary majority. It is legitimized by the citizens' belief that their will is represented there.
The blocked roads leading to the Parliament have a much greater significance than a security measure. They are a metaphor for a political system that, in the face of citizen dissatisfaction, chooses to close the roads instead of opening the way to real changes from the political responsibility of the government to a true electoral reform.
When institutions are protected by citizens, instead of citizens being protected through institutions, we have entered a deep crisis of representation.
This protest is not simply against another government. It is against a political class and a power caste that for more than three decades has determined the fate of the country, keeping the citizen out of real decision-making.
In a little while, the last plenary session for this legislature will begin, the next theater of the assembly that does not represent the citizens because it is a product of the Rama-Berisha agreements will begin.
This is why the citizen's anger is not only related to a name.
This is why the call is against a political culture that has held it hostage, against Edi Rama, against Sali Berisha and their political vassals.
But the greater the public distrust becomes, the more the government tightens its propaganda measures. The stronger the demands for accountability become, the more they are treated as a threat. And when the citizens shout in front of the Assembly "You do not represent us!", the answer is not reflection, but fences and police cordons.
Albania's problem is not just who governs. The problem is the way in which power has been exercised in 35 years.
Therefore, the battle that is taking place today, after 54 days of protest, is not simply about political rotation.
The real challenge is to build a Republic where no leader is greater than the Constitution, where no party is more important than the state, and where no citizen is forced to stand behind the fences to remind Parliament that sovereignty emanates from it.
Because in the end, this is not just a confrontation between the government and the protesters.
It is a confrontation between an old model of power and the demand for a new Republic.
In protest today is the Republic of the citizen against the political caste.
