Erdogan calls on UN member states to pressure Israel to rebuild Gaza

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday called for the reconstruction of Gaza to begin without delay and called on the international community to increase pressure on Israel.
Speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Erdogan said efforts to rebuild Gaza should begin as soon as possible.
" We must begin the reconstruction of Gaza without wasting time. In this regard, I call on you to exert greater pressure on Israel," he said.
Erdogan said that Turkey remains committed to the agreement signed in Sharm el-Sheikh a year ago and that it will continue to pursue its implementation.
Erdogan said that efforts to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state will ultimately fail.
" Everyone must understand and accept this now: Efforts to stifle the state of Palestine will end in failure ," he said.
He expressed hope that an independent Palestinian state with territorial integrity will eventually be established, based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
"God willing, we will see those beautiful days when an independent and territorially intact state of Palestine will be established, within the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital ," Erdogan said.
– The State of Palestine, Abbas' absence from the UN
At the beginning of his speech, Erdogan expressed regret that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has not been able to attend the UN General Assembly for two consecutive years.
" The Palestinian President, Mr. Abbas, has not been able to be in this hall for two consecutive years. This injustice towards our Palestinian brothers and sisters hurts our conscience ," he added.
Erdogan said Turkey will continue to speak on behalf of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, despite Abbas's absence.
“ Even though Mr. Abbas cannot be here in person, as we did last year, we will be the voice of a free and sovereign state of Palestine ,” he said.
Erdogan called on countries to recognize the Palestinian state. "Today, I once again call on all countries that have not yet recognized the state of Palestine to reconsider their decisions," he said.
– Humanitarian situation in Gaza
Referring to the situation in the Gaza Strip, Erdogan said that the enclave has turned into the world's largest cemetery for children and the region with the world's highest rate of amputations among children.
He said that trust in the UN can only be restored when children in Gaza can live safely, Palestinian children can look up to the sky and see balloons flying instead of warplanes and drones, children in Lebanon are not woken up by the sound of bombs, workers in Asia are not exploited, and people in Africa can see their future with confidence.
Erdogan also repeated his call for reform of the UN Security Council, saying that a structure in which the will of more than 190 countries depends on five countries is neither fair nor capable of fully building trust.
"The Security Council should be reformed in accordance with the principle 'The world is bigger than five,'" he said.
– International law, diplomacy and global inequality
Erdogan said the international community must change the approach according to which international law is applied differently to powerful and weaker states.
"An international system in which wrongdoers escape responsibility for what they do and impunity is normalized is doomed to rot," he said.
Presenting principles for a fairer international order, Erdogan said regional ownership should be used when international crisis resolution efforts reach an impasse, citing the Black Sea Grain Corridor as an example of an initiative that contributed to regional and global security.
He also called for cooperation and open diplomacy to be placed at the center of relations between states, arguing that history has repeatedly shown that politics built on distrust does not produce winners.
Erdogan called for a new paradigm to address widening global income inequality, saying that shared development, solidarity and interconnectedness are the keys to more peace and stability.
He also warned against "technological polarization" and "digital hegemony," saying that technological development must remain people-centered and should not create new divisions between those who have access to technology and those who do not.
