A record of 100-year-olds is set in Japan, here is their number

The number of centenarians in Japan has surpassed 92,000 for the first time, setting a record for the 52nd consecutive year, a Japanese government report said on Friday.

The number of people over 100 increased by 1,613 compared to last year, reaching 92,139, according to the Ministry of Health in Tokyo.

According to recent surveys, about 88 percent of all centenarians are women.

Life expectancy for women in Japan is about 87 years, while for men it is 81 years.

Japan has faced a rapid increase in the number of centenarians since the government began collecting data in 1963 – there have only been around 153 people of that age in the world.

Japan is facing major demographic changes, after several decades of recording population aging and declining birth rates.

Japan's population is shrinking rapidly.

Last year, the number of Japanese people fell by 801,000 to 122.4 million, the sharpest drop since data began to be collected.
