A moment of tension was recorded in the hall during the proceedings of the 76th FIFA Congress where President Gianni Infantino attempted to bring the delegates of Israel and Palestine closer together in a symbolic handshake.
The president of the Palestinian Football Federation, Jibril Rajoub, refused to stand alongside the vice president of the Israel Football Federation, not participating in the gesture requested by Infantino on stage.
Following the incident, Infantino stated that FIFA would continue to promote dialogue and cooperation in football, stressing the importance of giving hope to young people, despite complicated political situations.
On the other hand, representatives of the Palestinian Football Federation, in a statement to Reuters, linked the refusal to the conflict situation and their political stances.
Infantino also used the congress to announce that he will seek re-election next year, in elections expected to be held in Rabat, where he is considered the favorite for a new term.
