Secured fifth place, but Spain could have 6 teams in the Champions League

Spain is celebrating the official announcement that there will be five teams in the Champions League next season.

Their season ranking is now one of the top two in Europe (the other being the Premier League) after Lazio's elimination from the Europa League makes it impossible for Italy to reduce Spain's current lead in second place.

La Liga has had five teams in the continental top competition on more than one occasion, but it is still possible to achieve what has never been achieved before, having six teams.

There is a combination that would make this possible.

Athletic Bilbao must win the Europa League and not finish in fourth place in La Liga.

In this way, they would secure a place in the Champions League as the winner of the second European competition and the top four teams from La Liga and the fifth-placed team (or sixth, if Athletic Bilbao finishes fifth) would also qualify.

However, if Atlético finishes in fourth place, only fifth place will qualify as an additional Champions League spot and they will lose the option of a sixth place.

Even more feasible than Spain and the six Champions League teams is England.

The Premier League also has a fifth-placed team secured by the rankings and has also secured a place in the Europa League semi-finals with Tottenham and Manchester United, who are well behind the top five in the Premier League table.

This means, if one of the two teams wins the Europa League, England will almost certainly have six representatives in the Champions League, the top five in the final league standings and either United or Tottenham.

A historic event in which Spain can also play a role.
