"The Sun": Mourinho the leading candidate to take over at Manchester

Jose Mourinho is the surprise favourite to replace Ruben Amorim as Manchester United manager. The 40-year-old has endured a miserable spell since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November.

But after Sunday's 2-0 defeat to West Ham at Old Trafford, their ninth home defeat of the season, equalling the all-time record, Amorim issued a bombshell warning.

The Portuguese coach said he will leave if he fails to change the dire situation at United, who are ranked 16th in the Premier League table with 39 points, with two games remaining.

And if Amorim leaves, Mourinho is the frontrunner according to European bookmakers. According to Betfair, the "Special One" is the undisputed favorite at odds of 5 to return to Old Trafford and take over from his compatriot.

Mourinho, 62, was manager of Manchester United from May 2016 to December 2018, where he won the League Cup and Europa League in 2017, before things went sour.

United did not win another trophy for six years, until the 2023 League Cup, under Ten Hag, while Mourinho's only trophy since then has been the Conference League with Roma in 2022. Second on the list as favourite is Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, while third is former England manager Gareth Southgate./ The Sun
