"Hi Mum!" New WhatsApp fraud scheme revealed! Experts: More than 500 thousand euros stolen

Cybersecurity experts have issued a warning about a growing WhatsApp scam known as the “Hi Mum” scam. According to foreign media, this scheme has defrauded users of over £490,000 in 2025 alone, now also using artificial intelligence voice imitation technology.
It is reported that the scam begins with a message like “Hi Mum” or “Hi Dad”, where the person claims to have lost their phone and cannot access the bank. After gaining the victim’s trust, the scammer asks for money for rent or for a new phone. Now, to add to the credibility, they use AI to generate voice messages with the voice of the child or a relative. Security expert Jake Moore explains that these scammers use voices taken from social networks to create perfect impersonators.
“Even my mother didn't realize it was my AI-generated voice,” he says.
Foreign media write that the scam is not limited to "Hi Mum", but can pose as boys, girls, or even close friends, using information collected from social networks to create credible stories.
