Will the current euros disappear?

After the European Central Bank (ECB) published the selected proposals for the design of the next series of euro banknotes, a public consultation has been opened, where citizens across Europe will give their opinions until September 21, 2026.
The selected proposals are the result of a European Union-wide design competition, where more than 1,200 applications were submitted by graphic designers.
Current euro banknotes will continue to retain their value and will circulate alongside the new series. This will be the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002.
The selected proposals include well-known historical and cultural figures, such as Marie Skłodowska Curie, the only scientist to have won the Nobel Prize in both physics and chemistry, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and artist Leonardo da Vinci.
Another series of proposals focuses on nature and includes figures of birds, including the ibis and the white stork, according to the ECB.
Through this change, the European Central Bank also aims to increase the durability of banknotes and reduce their environmental impact.
