PROFILE/ Who is Joan Pelushi, the new Archbishop of the Orthodox Church?
Joan Pelushi was born in January 1956 in Tirana, into a Bektashi family.

He converted to Christianity in 1975, during his senior year, after a secret Orthodox Christian friend, he said, lent him a copy of the New Testament in French.

He studied for several years at the Orthodox Theological School of the Holy Cross near Boston in the United States.

Father Joani graduated from the Holy Cross Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, with a Master of Divinity degree. He studied in the USA thanks to a scholarship established there by Albanians in America in memory of Bishop Fan Noli.

He previously served as a lecturer and dean of the Theological Academy of the Albanian Orthodox Church.

Upon graduating from "Holy Cross" with a Master's degree in Theological studies, he returned to Albania, and Archbishop Anastasios appointed him to teach at the Seminary, as well as to serve in other places within the Church.

He ordained him deacon on February 27, 1994, and then as a priest on December 4 of the same year. In 1995, he received a study permit and returned to the United States to continue his studies.

When he returned in 1996, he was appointed director of the Theological Seminary in Durrës, and was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite on November 19.

On July 18, 1998, he was elected as Metropolitan of Korça and enthroned two days later.

He has translated a number of books into Albanian:1-On the Holy Spirit, published in 1996.2-Orthodox Faith. Vol. I Doctrine, published in 1997.3-Orthodox Faith. Vol. II Worship, published in 1997.4-Orthodox Faith. Vol. III Holy Scripture and Church History, published in 2000.5-Orthodox Faith. Vol. IV Spirituality, published in 2002.6-Saint Silouan, published in 2003.7-Dogmatics, (Dispensation) textbook at the Theological Academy.8-Illyrian-Albanian Saints, (Dispensation) 9-Sermons.

Also, former Metropolitan of Korça Joani has published numerous articles in the newspaper "Ngjallja", has presented papers at scientific symposia at home and abroad, representing the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania with dignity.
