Shooting in South Africa leaves at least 10 dead, several injured

At least ten people were killed and ten others injured in a shooting at a tavern in the Bekkersdal township, west of Johannesburg, South African police announced today.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the attack occurred overnight at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo area, when unknown gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on customers inside the bar and people gathered outside.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police initially confirmed ten victims and said officers remained at the scene as the investigation continues.

Gauteng Police Acting Commissioner Fred Kekana said multiple police units have been deployed.

"We are still taking statements. Our national crime and management team has arrived. The provincial crime scene management team, a team from the local crime evidence center, as well as the serious crime investigation teams, crime intelligence and provincial detectives have also arrived ," he said.
