Russian aggression, Chancellor Merz from Lithuania: We will defend NATO territory!

"Germany and our partners are determined to defend NATO territory against any aggression," Chancellor Friedrich Merz said from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.
“Russia threatens not only the security of Ukraine, but also of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic area,” Merz stressed, noting that the situation in the Baltic states remains “very tense.” “You can count on us. The security of our allies is also ours. There has never been a larger and more permanent deployment of the Bundeswehr in Eastern Europe. And I want to say this to the world: Dear Lithuanians, you can count on Germany,” Merz told Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda. The two leaders and defense ministers of both countries will visit German forces stationed in the country.
Approximately 4,800 Bundeswehr soldiers and 200 civilian employees have been gradually deployed to Lithuania since 2023 and will remain there until at least 2027, with the aim of strengthening NATO's eastern flank and deterring potential Russian aggression.
For the first time, Germany maintains such a large base abroad, but the German Defense Ministry estimates that Lithuania’s geographical location makes it “the most vulnerable state on NATO’s eastern flank.” Due to the Russian threat, the Lithuanian government announced last January that it would increase defense spending to 5-6% of its GDP by 2030.
