Donald Trump: I'm not worried about rising fuel prices, the operation against Iran is more important

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he was not concerned about rising US fuel prices due to attacks on Iran and Iranian retaliation in the Middle East. In an exclusive interview with Reuters, he stressed that the military operation remains the priority.
“I’m not even the slightest bit worried about that,” he said when asked about the price hikes at gas stations. “They’ll come down very quickly once this is over. And if they go up, let them go up. That’s much more important than a little bit of a gasoline price hike.”
The US president had recently mentioned a 4-5 week deadline for military action against Iran. However, political and military analysts question this assessment, noting that the US administration has yet to clarify the ultimate objective of the operation, while the conflict is spreading in the Middle East.
In the Reuters interview, Trump also said he was not considering releasing part of the US strategic oil reserves. He expressed confidence that the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important sea route for transporting oil near the coast of Iran, would remain open, as according to him the Iranian fleet is "at the bottom of the sea."
Oil prices on international markets have risen by about 16% since the start of the war on Saturday.
In the U.S., the average price of gasoline rose 27 cents from last week to $3.25 a gallon, according to the American Automobile Association. That level is also 15 cents higher than the same period last year.
For his part, Trump stated that prices "have not gone up much." The White House believes that the attacks on Iran and the consequences they bring to the fuel market will not last long.
However, political analysts warn that if the rise in fuel prices continues for a long period, it could hurt Republicans in the November midterm elections, where control of the US Congress will be determined. Voters are already unhappy with the high cost of living and Trump's economic policies.
