Ilir Meta reacts from prison: I appointed Ferit Hoxha as ambassador against my will

The Secretary General of the Freedom Party, Tedi Blushi, from the Parliament's rostrum, accused Ferit Hoxha, the new Foreign Minister recently elected to Parliament, of being the person who signed the maritime agreement with Greece in 2009. Blushi emphasized that at the time, when he was working as a journalist, Hoxha, as Albania's chief negotiator on this issue, had provided him with information and had attempted to "sell" the signing of the agreement as having been negotiated by Sali Berisha.
Blushi emphasized that he had informed Ilir Meta when he was president, after the sea issue had come up again with Edi Rama and when the Foreign Ministry at the time brought Hoxha's name to the president for ambassador to the UN.
He emphasized that President Bajram Begaj has all the public and classified information about what happened with the sea agreement, but despite this, he signed Hoxha's name as Foreign Minister.
Ilir Meta has reacted from his prison cell and declared that while he was president, he appointed Ferit Hoxha as ambassador several times, against his will.
"Mr. Balla, since you mentioned my name today on a very serious issue, I am forced to respond to you from a distance. You are right that you were confused by the truths that Mr. Tedi Blushi said today from the rostrum of the Parliament. Personally, when I was introduced to these truths, I could not recover for days, because the person we are discussing has been my favorite diplomat, since '98 until the day I learned these painful facts.
I don't remember how many times I promoted him to the position of ambassador in my previous positions, as Foreign Minister, Prime Minister and President of the Republic. But you have a "right" because I signed him twice against my will, for these reasons that I am making public to you, in the inability to meet him closely. First, after I became familiar with these facts, it is true that I signed him as ambassador to UNESCO only for human reasons, due to a family tragedy that had befallen him.
I did not want to sign it as an ambassador to the UN and I also told the Foreign Minister of that time these reasons, because it was an important and historic position because Albania was taking over the Presidency of the Security Council, which had been initiated since the time when Mr. Besnik Mustafaj was Foreign Minister. But, as Mr. Tedi Blushi told you today, after a few days, the Foreign Minister of the time sent me a message that she had talked to the Prime Minister and he had no other candidate. So I was forced to sign it because I could not leave Albania without an ambassador to the UN because it was the first time that our country was taking over the Presidency of the Security Council.
Secondly, I did not want to open another public crisis because the ones I had with the Prime Minister and the one-party Assembly were enough for me, both for the Constitutional Court and for other major issues. Mr. Balla, you “rightly” criticized Mr. Tedi Blushi today for saying it today and not saying it before. But I have a counter-question for you, if Mr. Blushi did not say it today and you, after a year, were to propose Ferit Hoxha for President of the Republic, would Mr. Blushi have a clear conscience, as a deputy who has sworn on the Constitution of the Republic of Albania.
And finally, I appreciate your pride in the decision of the Constitutional Court on the Sea Issue, but I would ask you that perhaps you have forgotten to take a look at my letter that I sent to all MPs about this agreement, as well as the public letter that I wrote to Ms. Elisa Spiropali, who you dismissed today, before her official visit to Athens. I understand you if you cannot find, as a political force, someone stronger professionally than Ferit Hoxha, but I would not be happy if you cannot find a more patriotic candidacy from your ranks , "writes Meta.
