France, Britain and Canada warn of sanctions if Israel does not stop Gaza

The leaders of Britain, France and Canada warned today that their countries "will not sit idly by" in the face of the "scandalous actions" of Benjamin Netanyahu's government and that they will take action if Israel does not stop its new military operation in the Gaza Strip and lift restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid.

"The Israeli government's refusal to provide basic humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable" and "risks violating International Humanitarian Law," French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in their joint statement.

The announcement was made public by the British government.

“We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank (…) We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions ,” they added, noting that these settlements are illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians.

The three leaders also declared that they are "determined to recognize a Palestinian state" within the framework of the "two-state solution."

Macron, Starmer and Carney also called on Hamas to immediately release the hostages it has been holding since October 7, 2023.

"Israel suffered a brutal attack on October 7. We have always supported Israel's right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is completely disproportionate," they emphasize.

The three countries assure that they support the efforts made by the US, Qatar and Egypt for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“A ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages and a sustainable political solution represent the best hope for ending the suffering of the hostages and their families, alleviating the suffering endured by the citizens of Gaza and ending Hamas’s control over Gaza (…) These negotiations must succeed and we must all work towards implementing the two-state solution, which is the only way to bring about the lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve and to ensure long-term stability in the region,” they added.
