Former Italian Prime Minister Draghi: Europe must become a Federation, otherwise it will collapse!

Mario Draghi warned that Europe faces serious risks, such as fragmentation, subordination and deindustrialization, against the backdrop of the collapse of the international order. As he emphasized, “the real threat, after the collapse of the international order, consists of what will replace it.”
According to him, the United States is adopting protectionist measures, imposing tariffs on Europe, threatening its territorial integrity and making it clear that the political fragmentation of Europe serves their interests.
Draghi stressed that Europe is at a critical crossroads, where it is called upon to either develop into a true federation of states in order to become a great power, or risk being marginalized.
Finally, he noted that in areas where Europe has adopted the federal model, such as monetary policy, the single market, competitiveness and trade, it enjoys respect as a great power and has the ability to negotiate with a single voice.
According to Draghi, Europe should pursue a "realistic federalism".
"Because we need to take the steps that are feasible today, with the partners that are ready today in the areas where progress can be made now. But federalism, because what matters is the destination ," he said.
He even warned that some still believe that the world has not changed, or that granting economic independence or even territory does not threaten their values.
"Some may delude themselves that the world has not really changed, some may believe that by giving up economic independence, or even territory, their ability to preserve values is not threatened. This should not stop the most visionary from moving forward," he said.
"What began with admiration must continue with hope. As we act together, we will rediscover something that has been dormant for too long: our pride, our self-confidence, our faith in a common future. And on these foundations Europe will be built," said the former head of the European Central Bank and former prime minister of Italy, who signed the historic report on the future of the European Union in 2024.
Draghi presented the dilemma in a clear way:
"So we have to decide: do we want to remain a simple big market, subservient to the priorities of others? Or do we want to take the necessary steps to become a power?"
As the former prime minister underlined: “ Europe is now at a crossroads: either transform into a true federation of states, with the ambition to be a great power, or risk being left behind. Individually, most European states are not even middle powers,” he said while receiving the title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Leuven.
"In the areas of defense, industrial policy and foreign affairs, they treat us as a heterogeneous group of middle-class states that they can divide and treat accordingly ," he continued.
Following Donald Trump's return to the White House, the United States "is boldly declaring for the first time that it believes that European political fragmentation serves its interests."
"And we face a China that controls important links in global supply chains and is ready to further exploit this fact," Draghi said.
Without a moment's notice, "Europe risks becoming subjugated, divided and deindustrialized. And a Europe that cannot defend its interests will not long preserve its values," warned Mario Draghi.
