Israel strikes entrance to Gaza hospital, kills doctor

An Israeli airstrike hit the entrance to a hospital in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, killing a medical worker and wounding nine other people, a hospital spokesman said.

The attack hit the Kuwaiti Hospital in the Muwasi area, where hundreds of thousands of people have sought shelter in large tent camps. The wounded were all patients and health workers, and two of the patients were in critical condition after the attack, said hospital spokesman Saber Mohammed.

The Israeli military has not commented on reports of this development so far.

On Tuesday, a spokesman for Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and EU - said the attacks had caused a loss of contact with the unit guarding Israeli-American hostage, Edan Alexander.

Hamas said the place where Alexander was being held had been targeted during the attack and that they were trying to reestablish contact.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his opposition to Palestinian statehood during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, who had stated that France intends to recognize a Palestinian state later this year.

In the call with Macron, Netanyahu said the creation of a Palestinian state would be "a huge reward for terrorism" and would bring a militant-led entity just a few kilometers away from Israeli cities.

In a statement published on X, Macron called for another ceasefire, the release of hostages and the resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza, which Israel has blocked for more than a month. He made no mention of recognizing a Palestinian state.

Macron said last week that France should aim to recognize a Palestinian state by June, when it will co-host an international conference with Saudi Arabia on implementing the two-state solution.

The Israeli military has struck and raided hospitals several times during the 18-month war, accusing Hamas militants of harboring them or using them for military purposes. Hospital staff have denied the allegations and accused Israel of endangering civilians and destroying Gaza's health system.

On Sunday, Israel struck the last major hospital providing essential health services in northern Gaza after ordering an evacuation. One patient died during the evacuation, and the strike severely damaged the emergency room, pharmacies and surrounding buildings, according to Al-Ahli Hospital.

The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, which manages the hospital, condemned the attack.

Israel said it had targeted a Hamas command center inside the facility, without providing evidence. Hamas denied the allegations.

The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 others hostage. Dozens of hostages are still in Gaza, 24 of whom are believed to be alive, after most were released under ceasefire agreements or other agreements.

Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed more than 51,000 people, according to an updated toll from the Gaza Health Ministry on Tuesday. That includes more than 1,600 people killed since the ceasefire ended and the offensive resumed last month to pressure Hamas to accept changes to the deal. /REL
