European Commission regrets announcement of US tariff increase on steel imports

The European Commission deeply regrets the announcement of increased US tariffs on steel imports.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday he plans to raise tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50% from 25%, putting more pressure on global steel producers and deepening his trade war.

"We deeply regret the announced increase in US tariffs on steel imports from 25% to 50%," a European Commission spokesperson said, as reported by Reuters.

"This decision further adds uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic ," the spokesman said, adding that " the tariff hike also undermines ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution."

Recall that US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would impose tariffs of 50% on steel imported into the United States, double the current ones.
