South Korea heads to early elections, new president to be elected on June 3

South Korea will hold a snap presidential election on June 3 to replace ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol. The decision follows a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court, which removed Yoon from office for declaring martial law in December 2024, a move that was deemed unconstitutional. Under Korean law, elections must be held within 60 days of a president's removal.

The election is expected to take place in a tense political climate, given the polarization between Yoon's Conservative Party and the opposition Democratic Party. The Conservative Party will face a major challenge to retain power and rebuild public trust after Yoon's actions sparked unrest. In the opposition camp, Lee Jae-myung is the leading candidate for the presidency.

South Korea's Constitutional Court upheld the decision to dismiss Yoon for declaring martial law, an action that violated the fundamental principles of the rule of law and democratic governance. Yoon was dismissed for attempting to overthrow civilian rule by deploying armed soldiers in parliament. This has led to new elections after months of political turmoil and major consequences for the country.
