International Red Cross: Gaza, worse than hell on earth

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, declared that the situation in Gaza has become "worse than hell on earth," raising the alarm about the humanitarian situation of the Palestinian population.

In an interview with the BBC from the ICRC headquarters in Geneva, Spoljaric said that "humanity is failing" and that states are not doing enough to end the war, stop the suffering of Palestinians and secure the release of Israeli hostages.

She stressed that Palestinians have been denied human dignity, while international humanitarian law is being consistently ignored. "What is happening in Gaza exceeds any acceptable legal, moral and humane standard," Spoljaric said.

The ICRC is an international organization operating in conflict zones and has over 300 staff in Gaza, most of them Palestinians. The organization's surgical hospital in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, is located closest to areas where many civilians have recently been killed during chaotic aid distribution near sites managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is supported by Israel and the US.

According to the ICRC, yesterday morning, surgical teams in Rafah received 184 patients. Of these, 19 people had died upon arrival and 8 others died from serious injuries. This was the highest number of casualties ever recorded at this hospital since its establishment more than a year ago.

The ICRC is the official custodian of the Geneva Conventions, which regulate the protection of civilians in war. The fourth convention, adopted after World War II, aims to guarantee the safety of the civilian population in armed conflicts.

Spoljaric stressed that the rules of war apply to all parties to the conflict and that Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, cannot be used as an excuse for current developments. She expressed the organization's deep concern about the rhetoric aimed at victory at all costs, total war, and the dehumanization of the other side.
