Beijing and Washington with high tariffs on each other's imports, Chinese president reacts: There are no winners in a trade war

Chinese leader Xi Jinping said there are no winners in the tariff war, as Beijing and Washington have imposed high tariffs on each other's imports.
Xi kicked off his Southeast Asia tour with a visit to Vietnam on April 14, signaling that China is committed to global trade after tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump rocked the world economy.
Although Trump has suspended some tariffs, the 145 percent tariffs on Beijing remain in place. China has retaliated by imposing a 145 percent tariff on American imports.
“There are no winners in a trade war or a tariff war,” X wrote in an editorial published in state media in Vietnam and China. “Our countries must resolutely defend the multilateral trading system, global industrial and supply chains, and the open and cooperative international environment.”
Xi will pay a two-day visit to Vietnam.
While this visit was likely planned earlier, it has become important due to the tariff war between China and the US, the world's two largest economies.
Vietnam has experience balancing relations with the US and China. While the country is ruled by a one-party communist system like China, it has strong relations with the US.
In 2023, Vietnam was the only country to welcome US President Joe Biden and China's Xi Jinping.
Vietnam has also been hit by the tariffs imposed by Trump in early April, which hit many countries around the world. Washington has imposed a 46 percent tariff on goods against this country, but the tariffs have been suspended for 90 days by Trump.
After Vietnam, Xi is expected to stay in Malaysia and Cambodia./ REL
