New record for illegal crossings, 800 migrants cross into England in one day

Saturday marked a new record for illegal crossings from France to England by dinghy, where 803 immigrants in 13 dinghies managed to evade French and British authorities while only taxiing from international waters to English shores, marking the highest number of crossings in recent months.
This is a record for the month of December on a single day since 2018, when dinghy crossings first began to be recorded.
December is traditionally one of the quietest months for English Channel crossings when temperatures are generally lower, both in the atmosphere and in the water, visibility is more limited, there are fewer hours of daylight and bad weather makes crossings more difficult due to wind and waves.
This record comes at a time when Sir Keir Starmer's Labour government has drastically strengthened anti-immigration laws in an attempt to discourage crossings that appear to ignore these laws.
Either these immigrants and criminal groups have failed to receive these signals through changes in British immigration laws, or the French border authorities are still pretending to try to stop the dinghies, even though they are generously funded by the British authorities in the naive hope that the French would not want to unload 800 illegal immigrants from their territory, as in this case.
Both options are likely to be valid. Just this week, Germany passed a law that would punish traffickers who attempt to bring migrants to Britain with up to 10 years in prison, while British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper was in Greece last week for a deal to combat human trafficking gangs.
But opposition shadow minister Chris Philp says "this government has wanted the Channel to be in a system where entry is guaranteed and the return of migrants is an option."
In fact, after Brexit and during the Conservative government, it has been as it is today, and the worrying issue is how long this situation will remain, even though there are stricter laws that at the moment clearly cannot stop traffickers from starting the engines of their dinghies and immigrants who want to come to England at any cost.
