The US, the UK and Australia are collaborating on the development of unmanned underwater vehicles, as part of the trilateral AUKUS defense pact.

In a joint statement, AUKUS announced that deliveries of these vehicles are expected to begin in 2027.

According to the statement, the program will strengthen the three countries' reconnaissance and strike capabilities, "and strengthen superiority in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare and contested littoral maneuvers ," the statement added.

This project is part of the so-called "Second Pillar" of AUKUS, which aims to develop advanced defense technologies, including quantum computing, autonomous underwater systems, hypersonic weapons, artificial intelligence, and cyber technologies.

"The flagship project will deliver a range of highly adaptable multi-mission UUV payloads designed to support underwater operations and maintain our collective advantage in the maritime domain," Hegseth said.
