Tragedy off the coast of Greece, 22 migrants die after 6 days at sea
At least 22 migrants have died off the coast of Greece after being stranded at sea for six days in a dinghy without food or water.
According to Greek authorities and testimonies from survivors, the victims died during the journey, and their bodies were thrown into the sea on the orders of suspected smugglers.
It is learned that the dinghy had set off on March 21 from Tobruk in Libya, bound for Greece, one of the main entry points for migrants seeking asylum in the European Union.
Two survivors have been taken to Heraklion hospital in Crete, while in a separate operation, 26 other people, including a woman and a minor, were rescued near the island by a Frontex ship.
Greek authorities have arrested two people from South Sudan, aged 19 and 22, on suspicion of being people smugglers.
According to the UNHCR, over 16,700 migrants arrived in Crete during 2025, while at least 107 people were reported dead or missing in Greek waters during the same period.
The event brings to light the great risks migrants face in trying to reach Europe, despite increased border measures.
