Tottenham fans write to the club: "We don't want De Zerbi"...

After a terrible season, Igor Tudor's Tottenham Hotspur are fighting to avoid relegation as they try to plan for the future, which will not include the former Juventus coach on the bench.

Roberto De Zerbi, free from his time at Marseille, is currently in the front row to replace the Croatian coach, topping a list of candidates that also includes Andoni Iraola and Mauricio Pochettino.

The London club are said to have even contacted the Italian coach to ask him to take the job immediately, but any discussions have been postponed until the summer... if the fans allow it. In fact, after De Zerbi's name began to circulate within Spurs, three Tottenham fan groups (Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane and Spurs Race) issued a statement urging the club not to hire him.

The reason? De Zerbi's rejection stems from the coach himself, who, while at OM, publicly defended Mason Greenwood, his player who, while at Manchester United, was on trial for attempted rape, assault and excessive control (the charges were later dismissed).

The statement from the three fan groups, representing the club's LGBTQ+ community, women and ethnic and cultural diversity, highlights Spurs' values, which they believe De Zerbi cannot represent precisely because of the way he defended Greenwood.

"The club is responsible for setting the values that influence how its fans feel welcome and what behavior is considered acceptable. And the coach plays a big role in all of this," the statement said.

"When someone in his position publicly defends a player like Mason Greenwood and does so in a way that downplays the significance of what happened, it becomes important not only for what he says, but above all for what he stands for. We are proud of the progress made in making football more inclusive and welcoming, and this progress should be considered important."

We do not seek perfection, but for accountability, transparency and leadership that respects the values that this club represents. The motto, 'Together, always', must have meaning. For us, it means 'No De Zerbit'.”
