Turkey/ Plane carrying Libyan army chief disappears

Turkish authorities have raised the alarm after radio contact was lost with a private plane carrying the Libyan army chief of staff, Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, and four other people, near the capital Ankara.

Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that the Falcon 50 business jet took off from Ankara at 20:10 local time, while radio contact was lost at around 20:52.

According to him, the flight had departed from Ankara towards Tripoli and, while over the Haymana area, had requested an emergency landing, but after this request, no further communication with the crew was achieved.

International media reports that air traffic control data showed flights diverting from Ankara's Esenboga airport. Meanwhile, Turkish authorities have not confirmed whether the plane has crashed, but local broadcasters have shown footage showing a flash of light in the area where contact with the plane is suspected to have been lost.

The visit of the Libyan army chief of staff to Ankara was announced earlier by the Turkish Ministry of Defense. During his stay, al-Haddad met with his Turkish counterpart and senior military leaders. Turkey maintains close relations with the UN-backed Libyan government, to which it provides economic and military assistance.
