Turkey is challenging France as a military superpower, has a plane with advanced
Turkey is making major strides towards modernizing its military and significantly increasing its military influence in the Mediterranean region, challenging France, which until now was considered the largest European military power in the area. At the center of this development is the KAAN project, a high-tech fighter jet designed by Turkish Aerospace Industries, which is expected to enter service in 2030.

The KAAN aircraft, initially intended for use by the air force from a land base, is now undergoing modifications that will enable it to operate from the MUGEM-class aircraft carrier, the construction of which began on January 2, 2025. To this end, the aircraft will be adapted for maritime flights and with folding wings, making it capable of operations in the open sea.

These efforts by Turkey to increase its military capacity are bringing it closer and closer to the status of the main power in the Mediterranean, facing France. Currently, Turkey has the second largest army in NATO after the United States, and aims to further expand its influence in the Middle East and Mediterranean region.

However, despite the increase in conventional capabilities, France remains a nuclear power, which still positions it as the main force in the Mediterranean. Although Turkey is rapidly advancing technologically and numerically, the military balance still remains influenced by the strategic capabilities of France's nuclear weapons.
