How much risk do Albanian exports to the US have? Trade between the two countries is estimated at 28 billion lek

While President Donald Trump has imposed new customs tariffs on imports from the Western Balkans, "Scan Intel" has focused on Albania's exports to the US to see how things have been going and to what extent we may be affected.
If we analyze the main export partners for 2024 as a whole, we see that the US is in the "Top 10" main partners.
The last three years have recorded the highest value of exports with this country, where for the past year alone the value of exports is recorded at around 7.1 billion lek. Meanwhile, the export record was recorded in 2022 with around 13.5 billion lek.
In total, the trade relations between the two countries for 2024 are estimated at approximately 28 billion lek. Last year's figures speak of a record of trade exchanges, i.e. exports and imports, if we analyze the data since 2005, when exchanges were estimated at around 4.41 billion lek. On the other hand, if we consider the monthly performance for the current year, i.e. 2025, data from INSTAT speak of exports worth 653 million lek over two months with the United States of America.
Compared to the same two-month period in 2024, the figure is estimated to have decreased, but the value of February exports for 2025 is significantly higher than January exports for the same year.
But what do we export to the United States of America?
If we analyze the year 2024, we see that the largest share of 42% is held by cast iron and steel. The value of exports for this chapter during 2024 is estimated at around 2.9 billion lek. The second group with the highest value is oilseeds and medicinal plants, followed by aluminum, furniture, dairy products, fish and plastics.
So, if tariffs increase costs for US importers, Albanian exports, especially those of pig iron, steel, oilseeds and aluminum, could suffer. Tariffs could make Albanian products less competitive in the US market, favoring suppliers from countries not affected by these tariffs. Meanwhile, Albanian businesses that depend on the US market could face difficulties. /SCAN
