War crimes in Prekaz, Kosovo Special Prosecution files indictment against 35 people

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office has filed an indictment for war crimes committed in the Jasharëvi neighborhood, in Prekaz, Skënderaj.
On Friday, Chief Prosecutor Blerim Isufaj presented the indictment against 35 people for committing war crimes against the Jashari Family in March 1998.
" The Special Prosecution has taken an important step to submit the indictment in an important case related to the killing of civilians in the Jasharëve Neighborhood in Prekaz, Skënderaj."
The significance of this indictment is significant because it is the first for the killing of civilians in the Jasharë/Jashari neighborhood in Prekaz. It is now up to the court to assess the evidence.
In this case, careful work was done so that the evidence could be proven in Court.
"What I can say is that the Special Prosecution remains committed to the rule of law and the criminal prosecution of all persons for whom there is a legal basis and sufficient evidence ," said Blerim Isufaj, Chief Prosecutor of the Special Prosecution.
" After several years of work, we have managed to finalize the investigation into the Prekaz case. Of course, it is a case, and it has been a complex and politically challenging case. Thanks to the work of the Socialist Party and cooperation with the police, we have reached this stage where we are with the filing of the indictment, which is now in court."
Based on the evidence, we have managed to establish a well-founded suspicion that those involved committed the criminal offense of war crimes on the 5th, 6th and 7th in Prekaz. As a result of the investigation, we have managed to identify 35 defendants in this case, who belong to high command positions in the Serbian Police, and it has been possible to establish which units of the Serbian forces participated in the attack, their positions, their activities, their arsenal and the damage caused to people and property.
"The evidence obtained has proven that 26 civilians were killed in this attack, among them children as young as 5, women and the elderly. It has been proven that Serbian police forces had taken hostages and mistreated the residents of the neighborhood ," said Valdet Gashi, prosecutor at the Special Prosecution Office.
The indictment was filed in absentia because such a possibility was foreseen by the Criminal Procedure Code. Because we have exhausted all possibilities to secure the defendants in court.
