New British Prime Minister appears in parliament, first challenge is prison overcrowding

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has convened his cabinet in Downing Street, ahead of his first appearance in the House of Commons since taking office.

Burnham, who has been in office for six weeks, will return to Parliament today, where he will face questions from MPs for the first time as head of government. The new parliamentary session starts at 2:30 p.m., while his first statement as prime minister in the House of Commons is expected to be made in the afternoon.

Before that, the government cabinet has gathered at Downing Street for its regular meeting, while ministers are expected to discuss the most urgent issues facing the government.

One of the main problems remains the capacity crisis in prisons in England and Wales, which are currently more than 97% full. Faced with a lack of space, the government has repeatedly reviewed the scheme for the early release of prisoners.

The Ministry of Justice recently announced that unused spaces within prisons, including laundry rooms, could be converted into cells to create new places.

Justice Secretary Alex Norris said the measure was not a definitive solution to the problem. He said the government would also build new prisons, and estimated that transforming existing spaces could create between 200 and 900 new places.

Norris also stressed that the changes will not bring an immediate solution to the crisis and that the greatest impact on prison capacity is expected to come from the deportation of foreign nationals who have committed criminal offenses.

The government is also planning to release some prisoners serving indeterminate sentences, known as IPPs, a category of sentence abolished in 2012 but which still affects some previously convicted people. The plans have caused concern among the opposition. The shadow justice secretary, Nick Timothy, warned that there was a risk that the scheme would also release people who could be considered dangerous.
