Vlora Hyseni's arrest/ AFP: The latest scandal to hit Rama, who has been facing protests for months

Prosecutors dealing with corruption issues issued an arrest warrant on Tuesday against the head of the State Intelligence Service, Vlora Hyseni, as part of a corruption investigation that also involves a senior police official.

The Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) announced in a statement that it has ordered the suspension from duty and placement under house arrest of Ms. Hyseni, suspected of leaking confidential information.

According to local media, Vlora Hyseni is currently out of the country. This is the latest corruption scandal to hit the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who for several months has been facing a protest movement against a controversial project for a tourist complex in the south of the country, supported by Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Her appointment had sparked criticism.

According to the Prosecutor's Office statement, the head of the Scientific Police Institute sector has also been arrested. Ms. Hyseni has been heading the Albanian State Intelligence Service (SHISH) since 2023.

Former State Police Director Ilir Proda, who was dismissed earlier this year, also appeared before SPAK on Tuesday morning, in connection with the same matter.

The investigation also includes Ermal Beqiraj, arrested in France in late August, and businessman Ergys Agasi, arrested on August 26.
