Who is not blackmailable and who can we trust?

By Përparim Gjeka

It has made a great impression on public opinion how two or three Socialist Party deputies who spoke out against the territorial reform voted for it. Think about how deputies with immunity, that is, with the highest legal personal protection, with high salaries, a high pension ensured even if they are no longer elected deputies, in the case of Sina e Vlorës even with wealth that does not need to be bought and sold, are again blackmailed by the government and change their minds by reducing their dignity and integrity. Meanwhile, the DP opposition did not abandon the vote as in many other cases, but remained "stand by", as part of the blackmail on the SP deputies: "if you do not vote, two or three of you from the DP are ready".

The question is rightly asked, in conditions where even the parliamentary opposition is completely either sold out, or blackmailed, or blackmailable, or a "pimp" in the opposition and, at best, incapable of forming a governing alternative that would lead the country to early elections and win, if one hope remains nightly protests in front of the Prime Minister's Office, how credible is this real civic opposition that we see every day expressing itself against this current political class?

As one of the first members of the protest coordination group, who has closely observed all the developments and dynamics in the protest, I can testify that, with minor exceptions, the majority of the group have maintained a patriotic and principled stance, in the general spirit of the anti-establishment protest, have sacrificed themselves, have faced lynching pressure and even blackmail of the mildest types, in the form of luring them with positions in various parties, personal and family favors in relations with the state, and even threats to their lives. At the same time, I want to be clear that this group has made the minimum of its expectations from public opinion to translate the anger and popular will into a political blow, therefore these blackmails have all been indirect, because there has been no need for strong intervention from the government, while in no case has its power been seriously endangered by the protest, to really see how unblackmailable or tempting the members of the coordination group would be. In the process of attempting to organize and represent the protest, we have encountered people with agendas close to the current parties, people with character problems who cannot work in a group, people with occult agendas, people who have not been patriotic enough or clear about what we are protesting, etc., therefore no higher way of organizing the protest has been able to succeed for four months.

The question arises, therefore, whether there are people or groups of people in Albania who would take on the task of real political change in Albania? Because in the protest, neither the other alleged elites, such as teachers, academics, artists, lawyers, architects, doctors, etc., other free professions that are more or less autonomous from the government in theory, were seen to be very active in presenting policies. At first, the diaspora was active, which was not organized among the people anyway.

If we take for granted the theory that has been proven so far in practice among Albanians that there is no one who is unblackmailable or unbuyable, according to the saying, if they are not sold for a lot of money, they are sold for much more money, which the current government has with the reserves of drug trafficking channels, oligarchs and corruption with state money, what would be the mechanism that would guarantee an opportunity for the establishment of functional democracy in our country?

This opportunity would have several prerequisites to be successful:

1. We cannot trust an individual, no matter how articulate and well-known he or she is, but a group of individuals who come up with the same idea at the same time.

2. There is a certain number among them who have given logically acceptable evidence of personal integrity and dignity, when in certain positions, even though they had the opportunity, they did not become part of evil, but were able to either withdraw clean, or they denounced evil and confronted it, regardless of the consequences.

3. There are a certain number among them who have held public patriotic positions over the years, but especially have expressed their support for the national protest during June and possibly have participated in that protest. So, it is more important that they be patriotic and determined than well-known figures, with scientific degrees or who only know how to speak beautifully without having a professional career.

4. They are able to form a political force with democratic and meritocratic rules and functioning within themselves, articulate and defend the will, hopes, and main anti-establishment theses of the national protest, without having the courage to seek votes to aim for political power.

5. They are not funded by money from crime and corruption and make the sources of funding transparent.

Let us pray to God that such Albanians will be able to organize as soon as possible, in Albania and the diaspora, to give the country the missing nationalist political alternative.
