Powerful tornado hits Sicily, overturns cars, two seriously injured

A powerful tornado has hit the western coast of Sicily, Italy, causing significant material damage and leaving several people injured, including children.

The extreme phenomenon hit the Marsala area, where strong winds overturned vehicles, damaged buildings and caused chaos on the streets.

Footage posted on social media shows a giant column of dust and debris sweeping along the coastline, as strong winds lift objects into the air and overturn cars.

According to local media reports, two people were seriously injured after the vehicle they were traveling in was overturned into a stream by the force of the wind. The exact extent of their injuries is not yet clear.

The storm also hit the Alcide De Gasperi school in the Strasatti area, where several children were injured during class after a double tornado swept through the building.

According to the newspaper La Sicilia, bookshelves were overturned and windows were broken by the force of the wind, causing panic among students and school staff. Emergency services arrived at the scene to help the injured.

None of the injuries reported at the school are believed to be life-threatening, although one boy was rushed to hospital.

Damage was also reported to other buildings, with strong winds tearing off roofs and scattering debris across the streets. Photos released showed vehicles completely overturned and thick clouds of dust covering the coastal area.

Storms and torrential rains have engulfed the region for several hours, especially the Trapani area and the Tyrrhenian coast, worsening atmospheric conditions.

Authorities are assessing the consequences of the extreme weather, while footage from Marsala shows the extent of the damage caused by the unusual atmospheric phenomenon.
