Surprising discovery: dinosaur with two claws found

A new species of two-clawed dinosaur has been discovered in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia.

Duonychus tsogtbaatari is a unique species in the Therizinosaur group that stood on its hind legs and usually had three claws. It was medium-sized and weighed about 260 kilograms.

Scientists think that its long, curved claws and ability to clench them tightly favored the dinosaur for feeding on plants.

The claws, measuring about 30 centimeters, are much larger than the bones beneath them. In addition to grasping, they may have been used for tearing or fighting.

Not only that, but this fossil also has keratin skin, an element that covers the entire claw, just like human nails, helping it with protection, movement, and capturing prey.

In addition to the claws, paleontologists found fossilized parts of the spine, tail, hips, arms, and legs.

Therizinosaurs were a group of herbivorous or omnivorous dinosaurs that lived in Asia and North America during the Cretaceous period, which began 145 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago.

Only a few groups of dinosaurs had two claws, the most famous of which was Tyrannosaurus rex, while those with one claw were even rarer.

UNESCO has called the Gobi Desert the largest reservoir of dinosaur fossils in the world. The region is an important source of fossils from the Late Cretaceous period, which is the last period of the prehistoric era and represents the final stage of dinosaur evolution.
